Frequently Asked Questions
How long does tattoo removal take?
That's a common question, and it's important to understand that tattoo removal is a process, not a quick fix. It relies on your body's natural ability to break down and eliminate the tattoo ink. Because of this, complete removal can take anywhere from a year to two years or even longer. We want to be upfront about this, so you have realistic expectations. We understand some patients have timelines, like weddings or military enlistment, and while we can't guarantee specific timelines, we can work with you to create a treatment plan.
Why does it take so long?
Your body needs time to do its work! We recommend a minimum of 8 weeks between laser sessions (and 12 weeks for darker skin tones) to allow for proper healing and ink elimination. Ideally, waiting three months between treatments is best. Rushing the process with shorter intervals can damage your skin and lead to unwanted side effects. It also doesn't give your body enough time to clear the ink broken up by the previous treatment. Patience is key for the best and safest results.
How many sessions are typically required for complete tattoo removal?
The number of sessions depends on various factors like the tattoo’s size, color, location, and age of the tattoo. While some may see significant lightening after just a few sessions, others might require multiple treatments. The average for the PicoSure laser is between 4-12 treatments for tattoo removal, but you may need less or more than that. One of the biggest advantages of PicoSure laser tattoo removal is that it frequently removes tattoos in fewer sessions than other tattoo removal lasers. Remember that every tattoo is different, and there are hundreds of factors involved…
What factors affect tattoo removal speed?
Several factors influence how quickly a tattoo can be removed. While the Kirby-Desai scale is a helpful tool for estimating treatment needs, it's important to remember that advancements in technology, like the PicoSure laser system, have improved removal outcomes.
Here's a breakdown of the key elements:
· Tattoo Characteristics: Things like the tattoo's size, location on the body, ink colors (some colors are harder to remove), whether it's a cover-up (layering), the amount of ink used (vividness), and any pre-existing scarring all play a role.
· Skin Type: Your Fitzpatrick skin type influences how your skin reacts to the laser and heals afterward.
· Individual Health: Your overall health, including age, fitness level, and immune system strength, impacts how quickly your body processes and eliminates the ink. We encourage healthy habits like exercise, staying hydrated, and massaging the treated area (once healed) to support the removal process. Ionic foot baths that I have in office, are another option that some patients find beneficial for aftercare.
· Technology: The type of laser used is crucial. The PicoSure laser, a powerful multi-wavelength system, is a leading technology for effective tattoo removal.
Does it hurt?
Tattoo removal involves some discomfort, often described as like getting the tattoo itself, like a rubber band snap or hot bacon grease. While it can hurt (I've had 16 tattoos removed myself!), it's generally considered less painful than getting a tattoo. Pain varies based on your tolerance, tattoo size/location/color, and the removal method. We offer prescription numbing cream ($20-$80) and recommend icing the tattoo before your treatment, eating, and hydrating beforehand. Over-the-counter acetaminophen (aspirin or ibuprofen) can also help. We also use a Zimmer cooling device to minimize discomfort. Your comfort is our priority, so discuss your pain management options with us.
Will it leave a scar?
Scarring is a common concern. Most scarring after removal is actually from the original tattoo application. PicoSure laser treatments rarely cause new scarring when proper protocols and aftercare are followed. While the PicoSure can sometimes improve existing scar tissue, it won't eliminate it completely. We'll assess your tattoo for pre-existing scars during your consultation and discuss what to expect. Even with proper treatment, scarring can occur if aftercare instructions aren't followed. Blisters and scabs are normal, but picking at them can lead to scarring. We'll thoroughly explain aftercare and emphasize its importance for successful healing.
Can I do a coverup after laser tattoo removal?
Yes, we can help with tattoo revision! Many patients want to lighten or partially remove a tattoo for a cover-up or to correct specific areas, rather than complete removal. I understand this, as I've lightened many of my own tattoos for revisions and can share my experience. We'll discuss your goals and create a plan. For cover-ups, fading usually requires fewer sessions (2-3) than full removal. We often recommend waiting six months after your last treatment before getting a cover-up, and it's helpful to get your tattoo artist's input on the faded tattoo's readiness.
Are there side effects to laser tattoo removal patients?
Side effects are normal and expected in tattoo removal. We'll discuss these with you throughout the process, so you're prepared. Common temporary side effects include redness, tenderness, swelling, blistering, scabbing, bruising, and sometimes hyper/hypopigmentation (darkening/lightening of the skin). Blisters usually appear within 24 hours, and scabs/bruising can take up to a week to heal. Pigmentation changes are more common in darker skin tones and usually resolve on their own. Proper protocols and aftercare are crucial to avoid permanent side effects, and we'll provide you with detailed instructions, I also have aftercare in my blog section of my website. You can always call or text me as well, I am always available to my clients for questions and concerns.
